Classic Sails
Tradition, perfected in Lymington.
From gaff cutters and lug-rigged workboats to Solent keelboats and restored cruisers, Sanders Classic Sails combine authentic detailing with the engineering discipline that keeps shapes true and handling kind. We use SMAR Azure CAD to model flying shapes, then build by hand in our Lymington loft, so you get the look you love with the longevity you expect.
What we build
- Gaff & gunter mains (with topsails if required)
- Lug sails (standing or dipping), sprit sails, boomless options
- Classic Bermudan mains and headsails for one-designs and wooden keelboats
- Staysails, yankees, fishermen & mizzen sails for yawls and ketches
Authentic detailing
- Worked eyes & hand-sewn rings (bronze or stainless), seized and finished by hand
- Leatherwork to gaff jaws, clews, reefing points, sliders and chafe zones
- Traditional roping (bolt ropes hand-whipped and spliced), external reef bands and reinforcement patches
- Hand-laid decorative stitching, cloth insignia and classic number styles
- Hoops, slides or lacing to suit spars and period hardware

Discreet modern engineering
Classic doesn’t mean compromise. We hide the clever bits where they belong:
- Accurate shaping: 3D design and load-path mapping for stable drive and easy helm.
- Cloth choices: premium woven polyesters in white, cream and tan “traditional” finishes for a period look. Optional low-stretch woven blends for bigger rigs or ocean use, such as Vectron, Duradon and Clipper Canvas and as the leading sailmakers we give our customers what they have come to expect – attention to every detail.
- Threads & adhesives: UV-stable threads, modern seam tapes and corner structures for strength without visual clutter.
- Hardware spec: bronze, stainless or galvanised fittings sized to real loads; mast-friendly sliders/hoops; soft eye options.
Finishing & options
Reef nettles and labels, leech/foot lines with alloy cleats, spreader/stanchion patches, leathered corners, buntlines and topping-lift patches, mast-hoop sets, period-correct colourways (cream, tan), stowage bags and covers. Along with our classic sail making, our cover loft offers a bespoke service to design and produce covers to protect items and sails when not in use.
The heritage look of traditional sails is paramount to Sanders, and our ‘Classic Sanders’ logo continues to complement the overall appearance of the finished sail.
Over the years we have worked alongside numerous restoration projects and have the skill and expertise to deliver an exceptional high standard of heritage-style sails, which will enhance and complement a stunning classic yacht.
