The Sanders XOD Sail Wardrobe

The XOD Class is a unique one-design sailing class where variations in boat setup, rig configurations, and crew weight significantly impact sail performance. At Sanders, we recognise these nuances and have developed a tailored sail wardrobe designed to optimise your boat’s performance based on these variables. Below is an overview of our sail range, categorised by function and design characteristics.

Jibs

XJS1 & XJS2 – All-Purpose Jib

The XJS series is engineered with a primary focus on height, making it ideal for flatter sea states such as those found in the western Solent. This design features a slightly flatter luff entry and is intended to be sheeted close to the coaming, allowing for a high pointing angle. The XJS range is available in two configurations:

  • XJS1 – Soft luff option
  • XJS2 – Wire luff option

To further enhance sail versatility, we offer two luff clip offsets (XJS1 only): ‘S-M 25’ and ‘M-L 25.’ These options allow sailors to induce additional depth into the luff entry, improving performance in lighter winds where increased forestay sag is necessary to maintain forward momentum. Given that XODs are relatively heavy boats, ensuring continuous movement through the water is essential for competitive racing.

XJC3, XJC4 & XJC5 – Deeper Jibs for Power & Drive

The XJC range is designed for choppier sea conditions, such as those experienced in the central Solent, where power and drive take precedence over height. Compared to the XJS series, these sails feature greater broad seaming and a deeper luff entry, requiring careful control of forestay tension to maintain an optimal sail shape.

  • XJC3 & XJC4 – Identical designs, available in soft luff (XJC3) and wire luff (XJC4) configurations.
  • XJC5 – A refined development of the XJC3, featuring an extended seam into the tack to maintain foot shape and enhance leech exit performance. This provides a balanced option between the XJS1 and XJC3 designs.

Main Sails

XMC1 – Proven Performance

A staple within the XOD class for over a decade, the XMC1 mainsail has delivered exceptional results across fleets. It features a powerful sail body with a deep luff entry, which can be effectively controlled due to its crosscut design. This sail is best suited for rigs where the mast’s top third is capable of bending, allowing for optimal leech twist and telltale response.

XMC4 – Enhanced Twist for Rig Flexibility

Developed from the XMC1, the XMC4 features increased upper leech twist and a flatter exit. This design benefits sailors whose rigs cannot bend the top of the mast as effectively. It pairs particularly well with the wire-luff XJS2 jib, complementing its characteristics for a balanced sail plan.

XMC9 – Modern Rig Adaptation

Designed for evolving rig setups, the XMC9 features a flatter luff entry tailored for stiffer masts and tighter forestays. This enables better power-up capabilities in medium conditions and improved depowering efficiency in stronger winds. Unlike the XMC1 and XMC4, the depth distribution extends further up the sail, with additional twist incorporated to ensure the top remains open when sheeted hard. Enhancements in panel layout at the clew provide increased structural support against mainsheet loads.

All our 2025 mainsail models feature refined slide positions and an improved shelf design, facilitating superior sail setting and greater ease of power adjustment. Every sail is custom-built in Lymington, allowing us to tailor finishes to your specific requirements.

Spinnakers

XSL1 – Optimised for Light Winds

The XSL1 is our dedicated light-air spinnaker, constructed with tape seams (rather than sewn) and featuring lighter patches to maximise performance in winds up to 9 knots TWS. Due to its specialised design, this spinnaker should be paired with one of our all-purpose or running spinnaker options for full wind range coverage.

XSM2 – Versatile All-Purpose Design

Constructed from Superkote 75, the XSM2 is designed for versatility across a range of wind conditions. With enhanced radial shaping in the head and middle sections, this spinnaker offers optimal performance for ‘round-the-cans’ racing, balancing reaching and running capabilities.

XSR3 – Performance-Focused Running Spinnaker

Developed from insights gained through class trials, the XSR3 features increased vertical camber for superior deep-running performance. While this sail excels in downwind sailing, it requires more precise trimming on reaching legs, making it a specialised addition to your inventory for specific race conditions.
