The Sanders Folkboats Sail Wardrobe
The Nordic Folkboat is a superb one-design class, originally conceived by Tord Sunden in 1942, based on elements from six joint-winning designs in a 1941 competition. With thriving fleets across Europe, the modern GRP-built Nordic Folkboat has evolved into the competitive one-design and IRC handicap racing yacht we recognise today.
Although the class has seen a few subtle developments, such as the adoption of aluminium masts, it has retained its traditional spirit. Behind the scenes, we have been continuously refining our sail designs to deliver the best possible racing performance for your Folkboat.
Sanders have been making sails for 50 years and we have put together the following sail options, including insights into the performance characteristics of each design and guidance on how to make the most of your sail wardrobe.
Jibs
FB-J1
Our crosscut, all-purpose jib, ideally suited to flatter water conditions. Designed with a flatter entry than other sails in the range, it is particularly effective in environments like the western Solent. Constructed from HTP+, a high-tempered polyester finish, this sail performs across a full wind range and pairs well with all our mainsail options.
FB-JD1
This is our crosscut light-weather jib from the JD range, featuring broader seaming and a deeper luff entry for added power when conditions demand a little extra punch. The luff curve is optimised for winds up to 10 knots, and the sail is constructed in a lighter Polykote finish. Best viewed as a specialist light-air option to complement one of our all-purpose jibs, this sail is not intended for use in stronger breezes due to its lightweight construction.
FB-JD2
Our newest jib design, developed over months of testing during the last season. This deeper all-purpose sail is designed for optimal performance in the varied conditions of the Solent. Made with HTP+ fabric, it delivers excellent power and drive, giving you the ability to adapt to shifting sea states with confidence.

Main Sails

FB-WM4
A proven mainsail design; highly successful for boats with wooden masts. Optimised to work in harmony with the FB-J1 jib, this sail is suitable for all wind conditions. Updates in 2024 include enhancements to the patch construction and the use of RSQ Polykote fabric, making this a well-rounded and dependable option.
FB-MM5
Our latest mainsail, featuring an improved crosscut layout for a smooth and powerful profile. Specifically optimised for aluminium masts, this design benefits from a refined luff curve and tailored leech twist and exit, ensuring performance across the full range of conditions typically experienced in the Solent. Made from RSQ Polykote and incorporating a new shelf foot construction, this sail offers outstanding versatility as an all-purpose mainsail.
Spinnakers
FB-AP3
We are extremely proud of our Folkboat spinnaker. Rather than overcomplicate matters with multiple variants, the FB-AP3 is a versatile and balanced design suited to both reaching and running. Constructed from Contender Superkote 75 and available in a variety of colours, it is the ideal spinnaker to complete your sail wardrobe.
