The Sanders XOD Sail Wardrobe

The XOD Class is a unique one-design sailing class where variations in boat setup, rig configurations, and crew weight significantly impact sail performance. At Sanders, we recognise these nuances and have developed a tailored sail wardrobe designed to optimise your boat’s performance based on these variables. Below is an overview of our sail range, categorised by function and design characteristics.

Jibs

XJS1 & XJS2 – All-Purpose Jib

The XJS series is engineered with a primary focus on height, making it ideal for flatter sea states such as those found in the western Solent. This design features a slightly flatter luff entry and is intended to be sheeted close to the coaming, allowing for a high pointing angle. The XJS range is available in two configurations:

  • XJS1 – Soft luff option
  • XJS2 – Wire luff option

To further enhance sail versatility, we offer two luff clip offsets (XJS1 only): ‘S-M 25’ and ‘M-L 25.’ These options allow sailors to induce additional depth into the luff entry, improving performance in lighter winds where increased forestay sag is necessary to maintain forward momentum. Given that XODs are relatively heavy boats, ensuring continuous movement through the water is essential for competitive racing.

XJC3, XJC5 & XJC6 – Power Through the Waves

The XJC range has been developed for choppier conditions, where maintaining power and momentum is more important than outright pointing ability. Compared to the XJS series, these designs feature a fuller sail body and deeper luff entry, delivering greater drive through waves while requiring more active forestay control to optimise sail shape.

  • XJC3 – Our benchmark all-round power jib. A fuller design with a wider sheeting angle that opens the slot, making the boat more forgiving and easier to drive through variable sea states.
  • XJC5 – A versatile hybrid, combining the power of the XJC range with an extended tack seam that allows tighter sheeting and a stronger high mode without sacrificing acceleration.
  • XJC6 – Our most powerful jib. Featuring a radial head and a significantly more forward draft position, it is optimised for light to medium winds in larger sea states where maintaining momentum is critical.

XJH7 – Heavy Air Specialist

  • XJH7 – The XJH7 has been developed specifically for heavy-air racing. With a forward-set draft and additional twist built into the leech, it maintains an efficient sail shape as the rig is progressively depowered. The result is a balanced slot, improved control and the confidence to keep pushing as the breeze builds.

Mainsails

XMC1 – Proven Performance

A staple within the XOD class for over a decade, the XMC1 mainsail has delivered exceptional results across fleets. It features a powerful sail body with a deep luff entry, which can be effectively controlled due to its crosscut design. This sail is best suited for rigs where the mast’s top third is capable of bending, allowing for optimal leech twist and telltale response.

XMC9 – Evolved for Modern Rigs

The XMC9 has been developed to complement the increasingly stiff mast setups and tighter forestays found on many modern XODs. A refined, flatter luff entry delivers improved efficiency as the breeze builds, while the sail carries its depth further up the body, producing a more stable and forgiving power profile. Additional twist has been incorporated into the upper leech to ensure the head of the sail remains open and responsive, even when sheeted firmly, improving control and depowering characteristics. The clew area has also been completely redesigned with an enhanced panel layout, providing greater structural support against mainsheet loading and allowing for more effective outhaul adjustment without compromising sail shape.

XMC11 – Designed for Lighter Crews

The XMC11 is our flattest mainsail design and has been developed specifically for crews consistently sailing below approximately 250kg. With less crew weight available to counteract the heeling moment, maintaining a flatter, more efficient sail shape becomes increasingly important. The XMC11 reduces drag, improves balance and allows excess power to be released more progressively through gusts, helping the boat remain on its feet for longer. Additional twist has been incorporated into the leech profile to encourage a cleaner exit and more effective depowering. Despite its flatter overall shape, the sail retains excellent versatility, with power readily available through the effective use of jumper tension, mast bend and running rigging controls.

Standard Features

Every Sanders XOD mainsail benefit from continual development and incorporates our latest slide positioning, refined shelf-foot geometry and optimised detailing to improve sail setting, durability and the overall range of adjustment available to the helm. Each sail is individually designed and built in our Lymington loft, allowing the finish and specification to be tailored to your individual boat, rig and sailing style.

Spinnakers

The introduction of the revised XOD spinnaker rules in 2026 opened the door to a new generation of sail designs. By allowing increased girth in the upper third of the sail, the rule changes have enabled more efficient flying shapes and significantly greater scope for design optimisation. Throughout the season, we have continually refined and evaluated our designs through extensive on-the-water testing. The result is a complementary range of spinnakers, each developed to maximise performance across different wind strengths and sailing angles.

XSR2 – AP Runner

Our all-round running asymmetric, designed for maximum drag on deep downwind legs. With generous camber and a fuller head profile, the XSR2 delivers excellent stability, carries power exceptionally well and remains forgiving to trim when sailing the deepest angles in a moderate breeze.

XSH3 – Light Air VMG

Developed specifically for lighter conditions, the XSH3 features a narrower head angle, reduced upper girths and a lighter cloth specification. The flatter upper sections reduce drag and allow the sail to be trimmed closer to the wind, making it exceptionally effective on tighter reaching angles while retaining excellent VMG performance in light airs.

Every Sanders XOD spinnaker is built from premium Contender Superkote nylon, renowned for its outstanding durability, low stretch characteristics and consistent flying shape. With an extensive palette of colours available, each spinnaker can be personalised to complement your boat. Our intuitive Colour Your Spinnaker app allows you to explore countless combinations, ensuring your sail looks every bit as impressive as it performs.
